Jay Wright didn't pick Villanova to win all his bracket pools

HOUSTON — Villanova coach Jay Wright has always been proud of being in the Big East — whether it was the old incarnation or the new version that includes Butler, Xavier and Creighton.

Villanova Wildcats head coach Jay Wright speaks to media during a press conference at NRG Stadium.

But the Wildcats coach may have sold himself a little too short this year. At least in one of the brackets he filled out for his family NCAA tournament pool.

"In my pool, my family pool, which we do just in the family, everybody has to pick Villanova all the way through in one bracket," Wright said. "I had Xavier in my other bracket. I just thought they were good enough, and they are."

Wright reiterated that in a one-game, winner-take-all game, sometimes the better team doesn't always win. Matchups matter. He then pointed out that the team his Wildcats beat in the Elite Eight — Kansas — were also good enough to win it all. But the Jayhawks weren't good enough to beat Villanova on that particular day.
