Tony Stewart finishes 15th in final NASCAR season

USA TODAY Sports
Tony Stewart is racing in his final season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

As Tony Stewart counted down the final races of his Sprint Cup career, USA TODAY Sports took a look at how the three-time champion fared at each track as he visited them for the last time.

On Nov. 20, 2016, Stewart finished 22nd at Homestead-Miami Speedway to end his career at NASCAR's highest level. He celebrated three victories there, his last and most memorable in 2011 when he clinched his third title. While there wasn't a fourth, there was a healthy fan turnout for the driver known as 'Smoke.' And Jimmie Johnson, who won his seventh title, gifted Stewart his helmet in victory lane.

Stewart finished 15th in his final season.

Tony Stewart leaves a legacy of talent, determination and controversy

The future Hall of Famer missed the first eight races of this season while recovering from a broken back but won at Sonoma Raceway in June to put himself in contention for a Chase for the Sprint Cup berth. By finishing the regular season ranked 27th — clearing the hurdle to have a top-30 ranking after 26 races — Stewart assured himself the opportunity to race for a fourth championship.

Stewart, who entered NASCAR's playoffs as the No. 11 seed in his final year as a full-time driver, was eliminated from the Chase after a 13th-place finish at Dover International Speedway on Oct. 2.
