Even in this reloading year, the Shorewood girls swim team is going to have a respectable presence in the WIAA D2 state meet, as the Greyhounds advanced two individuals and two relays to the event at the UW-Madison Natatorium on Friday, Nov. 11.

"The girls swam great this weekend," said coach Cassie Peterson. "Many of them were holding a taper from conference last week, so to come back and swim as fast or faster at sectionals is great. I was very proud of how they stepped up and swam smart races. There can be a lot of pressure on these meets to ultimately qualify for state, and they did a great job."

The Greyhounds will advance junior Maya Schneider in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500 free. Schneider will also have a hand in both the state qualifying 200 medley and 200 free relays. Both the medley and the 200 free teams will be made up of exactly the same individuals, as Schneider will be joined by sophomore Sophie D'Amato, senior Leah Jorn and sophomore Anna Czubak.

D2 competition will get underway at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11.

"We are excited to have (these qualifiers)," said Peterson. "... As you can see, it's a very fast meet, but I think many of our girls showed that we can move up in some events and qualify more individuals to state (next year)."

The state qualifiers helped the Greyhounds score 213 points and earn fourth in the WIAA D2 sectional at New Berlin Eisenhower on Nov. 5. Whitefish Bay won the meet with 317.5.

Schneider earned her individual berths with a fourth in the 200 IM with a three-plus second drop (2:15.16) and in the 500 free with a six-second drop, good for fifth (5:26.82).

The medley relay earned their state berth with a third-place effort of 1:54.67, which was more than two seconds better than its previous season best, while the 200 free relay was also third with a four-second season best of 1:43.85.

Other good finishes for the Greyhounds included the following: 200 free: Lucy Phillips, 10th (2:10.43), Jorn, 11th (2:10.59); 200 IM: Chloe Schneider, 11th (PR 2:22.76), Grace Anderson, 15th (2:29.85); 50 free: D'Amato, eighth (PR 26.05); 100 butterfly: Jorn, sixth (PR 1:02.77), Chloe Schneider, ninth (1:05.08); 100 free: D'Amato, ninth (57.14); 500 free: Erin Szablewski, 10th (5:42.26), Phillips, 12th (5:45.28), Katie Love, 14th (PR 5:50.82); and 100 breaststroke: Czubak, fifth (PR, 1:12.49), Zoe Tiffin, 10th (PR, 1:16.71).
