With the WIAA state girls swimming field getting faster every year, it's good to develop a little speed in the freestyle ranks..

Nicolet had that this fall, as sophomore Taylor Hall qualified for the D1 state meet in the 50-yard freestyle and led-off the 200 free relay team of freshman Keona Cirulis, sophomore Ana Eurich and junior Anna Christenson that also advanced. Joining them at the UW-Madison Natatorium on Saturday, Nov. 12, will be breaststroker Elizabeth Sullivan.

Coach Bill Shuster said all swimmers should benefit from another week of tapering heading into state.

"Overall I was very, very pleased with our performance at sectionals," said Shuster. "For the most part, everyone swam their best time of the season or of their life.

"I think that we are going to go faster next week because the girls, Taylor Hall (50 Free) and Elizabeth Sullivan (100 Breast) especially, were working themselves up a bit too much because they were too focused on getting to the state meet and not walking themselves through their races. But they made it and already have a much more relaxed feel to them."

The D1 state meet meet will get underway at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the UW-Madison Natatorium.

The Knights' qualifying efforts came out of the WIAA sectional at Cedarburg on Nov. 5, where they finished fifth with 212 points, as the North Shore champion and host Bulldogs overpowered the field with 366 points.

Hall earned her 50 spot with a fourth-place sectional finish of 24.4 seconds. An impressive six swimmers in the sectional event went under 25 seconds, and all qualified for the state meet.

The 200 free relay was third in its race, dropping close to three seconds from its previous season best with a qualifying time of 1:40.87.

Sullivan dropped 1.2 seconds from her previous best 100 breaststroke time to take third and advance to state (1:07.85).

Other good efforts for the Knights included the following: Lauryn Wagner, seventh (339.25 points), Christenson, ninth (322.2); 200 medley relay: Hall, Sullivan, Eurich and Christensen, sixth (two-second season best, 1:52.09); 200 free: Eurich, seventh (three-plus second PR, 2:03.5), Megan Sullivan, 10th (two-plus second PR, 2:05.07); 200 IM: Cirulis, 11th (2:24.51); 50 free: Christenson, 12th (26.18); 100 butterfly: Aviva Silverman, ninth (PR, 1:03.33), Olivia Forshee, 12th (four-second PR, 1:04.49); 100 free: Eurich, 10th (PR, 56.61); 500 free: Megan Sullivan, eighth (seven-second PR, 5:39.71), Megan Gauss, 16th (PR, 6:05.86); 100 backstroke: Hall, sixth (PR, 1:00.02), Cirulis, 13th (1:04.66); and 400 free relay: Kate Tobin, Katy Richards, Cirulis and Megan Sullivan, eighth (SB, 3:56.01).
