The Buffalo Bills cut running back Karlos Williams on Saturday, announcing the stunning news in a 13-word release just two hours before they host the New York Giants in a preseason game in Orchard Park.

Williams, a second-year pro considered a key to the team's running game, was going to miss the first four games of the season anyway for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. He had arrived at off-season workouts overweight, which didn't sit well with the coaching staff and team management.

The release said only: "The Buffalo Bills today announced that the team has released RB Karlos Williams."

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound was a fifth-round pick out of Florida State who surprised last season. He ran for 517 yards and scored seven touchdowns as LeSean McCoy's backup. The Bills now have veteran Reggie Bush, Mike Gillislee and rookies James Wilder Jr. and Jonathan Williams among those who can fill Williams' shoes.

Check back later for updates from Bills beat writer Sal Maiorana on this developing story.
