ASHEVILLE, N.C. — If Tim Kaine doesn’t get elected as vice president, he might have a shot at playing the mouth harp at a few local beer joints.

Hillary Clinton’s running mate made a go of it Monday night. After finishing a campaign event in Asheville’s Southside neighborhood, the Virginia senator stopped in at Buxton Hall Barbecue for a bite then came next door to Catawba Brewing Company, where he shook hands and posed for pictures with unsuspecting beer drinkers and local Democratic officials who poured in when they heard Kaine was coming.

Then the man who could be a heartbeat away from the presidency picked up a harmonica and jammed with the band. He played along with two tunes including “Wagon Wheel” by Bob Dylan and Old Crow Medicine Show.

The crowd, fueled by beer and political exuberance, stood, clapped and held up cellphones to catch the moment.

Catawba music manager John Yaklin said they had no idea Kaine was coming until “about an hour” before he and an entourage of police, secret service and staff showed up.
