New video after Philando Castile shooting: 'Mom... I don't want you to get shooted'

John Bacon, USA TODAY

Dramatic squad car video from moments after a suburban Minneapolis police officer fatally shot Philando Castile shows the 4-year-old daughter of his girlfriend begging her mother to stop cursing so she won't be shot.

“Mom, please stop cussing and screaming cause I don’t want you to get shooted,” the girl says to Diamond Reynolds, who is handcuffed next to her child in the back of the squad car. Reynolds asks for a kiss, then her daughter tells  Reynolds that "I can keep you safe."

In this image made from July 6, 2016, video captured by a camera in the squad car of St. Anthony Police officer Jeronimo Yanez, the Minnesota police officer shoots at Philando Castile in the vehicle during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minn. Yanez's backup officer Joseph Kauser is seen standing on the passenger side of the vehicle. The video was made public by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Ramsey County Attorney's Office.

Reynolds says she can't believe Castile was shot, and when the child cries, Reynolds says she wants to get out of the handcuffs.

Watch that video below (Warning: the video begins with graphic language):

"No, please don't. I don't want you to get shooted," the child cries out. After more reassurance from Reynolds, the child adds: "Don't take them off. If you take them off you get everything started."

"I wish this town was safer," the girl says. "I don't want it to be like this anymore."

Reynolds response: "Tell that to the police, OK? When they come, tell them that you wish that they didn't have to kill people."

Castile, 32, was fatally shot at a traffic stop in July 2016 by St. Anthony, Minn., police officer Jeronimo Yanez. Last week a jury acquitted Yanez, 29, of manslaughter and other charges in the case, setting off a weekend of protests.

Castile was pulled over for a broken tail light, but radio transmissions later revealed Yanez thought Castile resembled a suspect in a recent convenience store robbery.

The initial conversation was amicable. Dashcam video shows Yanez telling Castile about the brake light, and moments later Castile says "Sir, I have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me." Castile had a permit for the weapon.

Yanez quickly pulled his weapon out of its holster and warned Castile not to reach for his gun. Then, more urgently, he says "Don't pull it out" before firing seven shots. Castile's last words caught on the recording were “I wasn’t reaching for it.”

Reynolds was in the seat next to Castile and her daughter was in the back seat.

Yanez testified he was “scared to death” and that he shot Castile because he failed to stop reaching for gun.

The shooting drew global headlines when Reynolds streamed the immediate, chaotic aftermath on Facebook.
