Fatal shooting reported at West Texas high school

A female student at Alpine High in West Texas shot another student then fatally shot herself at the school Thursday, authorities said.

Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson said preliminary information indicates a female student shot another female student in a bathroom. The shooter died from what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds, ABC News reported.

The Alpine Avalanche, which also reported the death, said on its Facebook page that the high school was being evacuated. Elizabeth Carter, a lieutenant at the Texas Department of Public Safety, told the Associated Press that someone brought a gun onto the high school campus Thursday morning.

Sul Ross State University's Alpine campus also was locked down with students and staff told to "shelter in place." Dodson said someone called the sheriff's office and said "Y'all better leave me alone" and made threats against the university, CBS7.com reports.

Alpine High is a four-year school with about 300 students, most of them Latino. The Alpine Independent School District serves almost 1,000 students across almost 2,000 square miles of Brewster County in West Texas.
