SHOREWOOD - Construction will begin soon on a 100-unit senior living facility along the Milwaukee River.

The four-story senior apartment building, called The Oaks at Shorewood, will be built behind the Harbor Chase of Shorewood facility, 1111 E. Capitol Drive, which offers assisted living and memory care services. The 4-acre site at 3900 N. Sherburn Place was formerly home to a Milwaukee PC store.

The Oaks at Shorewood is designed for active seniors 55 and older. The building will include 23 one-bedroom units with monthly rents ranging from $1,250 to $1,360 and 77 two-bedroom units with monthly rents ranging from $1,680 to $2,275.

A groundbreaking ceremony for The Oaks at Shorewood was held on May 5. Construction is scheduled to start by the end of May and is expected to last 12 to 15 months.

The building's amenities include underground parking, a library, a fireside lounge, a business center with computers and other office equipment, a theater room, a game room, a fitness center, a yoga studio, a community room with a community kitchen, an outdoor swimming pool and an on-site leasing office.

The Shorewood Village Board agreed in 2014 to provide Sherman Associates, the developer of the project, with a $5.5 million pay-as-you-go tax incremental finance note, which the village would pay over the course of 20 years using additional tax revenue generated by the senior living facility. The Oaks at Shorewood is expected to be worth at least $18 million.
