Two Whitefish Bay High School students narrowly avoided the parking structure collapse at Bayshore mall in Glendale on Thursday.

Anna Holz, 18, and Alex Peckey, 16, were at a stop sign just feet from the garage entrance when the top floor fell in front of their eyes.

The pair had left school during lunch hour to pick up Qdoba burrito bowls.

“Ten seconds later, we would’ve been in there,” Holz said.

Authorities said they are "99% sure" no one was injured in the partial collapse of the parking structure, which happened just after noon Thursday. Shoppers and employees reported hearing loud booms and feeling buildings shake as a portion of the parking garage's third floor collapsed onto the ramp between floors, sending piles of snow and concrete down to ground level.

Peckey called 911 after seeing the collapse and put the car’s hazard lights on.

The dispatcher told them to roll down their windows to see if they could hear anyone yelling for help.

The students saw people driving out of the damaged garage, and they encouraged cars behind them to turn around.

The two returned to school without lunch and told their teachers and classmates about the damage. Some didn't believe them until they were shown video they’d taken.

Holz and Peckey said they felt shock initially, and then anxiety over whether anyone had died. Mostly, though, they felt lucky.

“We should go buy lottery tickets right now,” Holz said.

Instead, they finally picked up those burrito bowls after school and vowed never again to park in that garage after a snow storm.
