Stephen Colbert says he was tailed in Russia, offers Trump an 'apology'

Stephen Colbert is glad to be home sweet home.

The Late Show host said he returned Sunday night from a visit to Russia, which he joked on Twitter would include a search for tapes of ex FBI director James Comey. Colbert said that he shot a handful of segments that will air at a later date.

“I don’t know if you knew this but I was in Russia last week," said the funnyman said, who stopped by the popular Russian late-night program, Evening Urgant, during his trip and casually mentioned he was considering a presidential run in 2020. "You know who did know I was in Russia? Russian intelligence. Hardcore fans evidently, followed me everywhere."

"Also, got some attention from American intelligence — couple of guys seemed to pop up everywhere we went," he added. "But it's important. Keep your eye on a comedian while he’s in Russia doing jokes. I could be giving state secrets to the Russians. Oh wait, someone’s already got that covered. My apologies.”

But that wasn't the only mea culpa the late night host doled out Monday. He had a response for "Prez T" who requested atonement on Twitter Monday, following a Washington Post report looking at how the Obama administration handled attempted Russian interference in the 2016 election.

"The real story is that President Obama did NOTHING after being informed in August about Russian meddling," Trump said in a two-part tweet. "With 4 months looking at Russia.....under a magnifying glass, they have zero 'tapes' of T people colluding. There is no collusion & no obstruction. I should be given apology!"

"Look, I'm a big enough man to apologize," Colbert said, "and I think I speak for the majority of Americans when I say I'm sorry you're president."
