What's Stephen Colbert doing in Russia? Finding the James Comey tapes

Will Stephen Colbert still be smiling after his weekend in Russia?

You may have noticed that CBS ran a repeat of The Late Show Thursday night. It was for good reason: Stephen Colbert is on assignment in Russia.

The comedian tweeted a photo of himself in front of the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg earlier in the evening, not long after President Trump came clean about not having any recordings of his private conversations with ousted FBI Director James Comey.

Colbert didn't elaborate on what he was doing in the country or that city, but captioned the photo, "Don't worry, Mr. President. I'm in Russia. If the 'tapes' exist, I'll bring you back a copy!"

Late Show, which bested NBC's Tonight Show again in the latest Nielsen reports, returns Monday, presumably with Colbert back in the Ed Sullivan Theater. Although, given the tactics of KGB officer-turned-Russian President Vladimir Putin,  one can't entirely rule out the that Colbert will have to do the show remotely from Moscow's notorious Lefortovo Prison.

If Colbert's not careful, he could be broadcasting from Moscow's Lefortovo prison next week.

Colbert is the second late-night host to travel to Russia in recent years. In April 2015, John Oliver went to Moscow to interview Edward Snowden, who was granted asylum there after leaking NSA documents and has permission to stay until 2020.
