Donald Trump, who turned 71 on Wednesday, didn't have the best birthday: That evening, The Washington Post reported that Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller is investigating whether the president obstructed justice by firing FBI director James Comey.

Late Night With Seth Meyers

Meyers started out Thursday's "A Closer Look" segment with a montage of Donald Trump dropping reminders about his birthday. He then shared an observation: "Donald Trump talks about his birthday like a 14-year-old girl whose dad has a boat. 'It's my birthday and we're gonna party on my dad's boat — but not you, Tricia. It's my birthday!'"

Still, the Late Night host brought out a birthday cake for the president and lit the candles, "because, after all, it is your special day. And how bad can things really be when it's your birthday?"

Cue the montage about Mueller investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice.

"Trump is the kind of spiking the ball at the six-yard-line," Meyers observed, suggesting the president had claimed "total and complete vindication" a tad prematurely. "Because he fired Comey, Trump is now personally under investigation."

He proclaimed it "one of the greatest self-owns in political history" and invoked the "immortal" words of DJ Khaled: "Congratulations, you've played yourself."

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

Colbert lamented that the report that Trump was under personal investigation didn't surface until after he'd finished taping Wednesday's show.

"Looks like Trump's going to need to change that hat (to) 'Make justice obstructed again," he joked.

"This is a historic moment: The president of the United States is presently under criminal investigation," Colbert said. "When the movie comes out, this will definitely be in it, and I will definitely be played by Hugh Jackman. And I'll still have the (Wolverine) claws!"

Speaking of superheroes, he added that Mueller is rumored to be assembling an "all-star legal team" to aid with his investigation. "Mueller's like Batman," Colbert giddily proclaimed, "putting together The Flash, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman to create the Obstruction of Justice League."

He added, "I'd watch that movie."
