Drake professes love for Rihanna at VMAs, everyone loses collective minds

If any bit of celebrity news could cause a full blown Internet meltdown, it would be an engagement between Robyn Rihanna Fenty and Aubrey Drake Graham. And forget about ever using Instagram again if they decide to have babies.

Many thought that they could be on the way to love and marriage Sunday night and pandemonium ensued.

It's long been rumored that the two have had a discreet dalliance over the years, though the "friends" and frequent collaborators have never confirmed the specifics of their relationship. That hasn't stopped them, however, from titillating fans with the possibility that it's true love.

Is this real? Or are we being trolled?

On Friday the One Dance singer surprised Rih with a billboard in L.A. congratulating her on receiving MTV's Video Vanguard Award. During the awards show Sunday, he took the stage, clad in black tuxedo, and proceeded to melt everyone watching into a puddle of romantic wistfulness with a heartfelt presentation of the VMAs high honor.

"The first time I met Robyn Fenty was in 2005," he said, referencing the first video they shot together. "The song was Pon de Replay and the director of the video was Little X. I was introduced to her as the kid who played background music at the restaurant as people ate at their dinner. It's hard to believe that 11 years later all three of us would come together to create the visual for a song called Work."

Cue the screams.

"Today the world knows Little X as Director X, they know me as Drake and not the kid singing as you order pasta. But 11 years later they still all know Rihanna as the one and only Rihanna."

Still unclear what happened here.

He went on to praise her performances, style and sense of self, before saying one line that set Twitter over the edge.

"She's someone I've been in love with since I was 22 years old," he said.

Or not... Drake went to hand Rih Rih the award, and well, the jury's out on whether he went in for a kiss that was deflected, but there were some awkward head movements.

Mr. Champagne Papi also posted a late-night selfie with Rih, with what appears to be a wine glass, saying "This is a night for us all to be thankful for what you have done for us! You have affected so many of our lives in the best way possible. Tonight we celebrate you!"

Maybe hope is not lost. No doubt we'll be analyzing this video for some time to come.
