'I don't think there is any store like this': A unique market opens in downtown West Bend

The owner of the new market store Green Dog Market in downtown West Bend says it is more than a grocery store.

"I don't think there is any store like this," owner Stefanie Ulma told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. According to its website, the store is an "experience you will want to repeat daily." Green Dog Market opened the end of January.

Green Dog Market offers food, beverage, beauty and pet products. It also offers lotions and wine. The products are healthy, natural and mostly organic, said Ulma. "We are basically bringing a small market to the community that will use small business (as its vendors)," she added.

Ulma said there are new products in the market every day, and the ingredients are always fresh.

"Every day we get new vendors who contact us," she said.

Ulma said the store is in a space that has been vacant for a while and the shelving is made of wood from West Bend. "It has a lot of charm. It is very old school," she said.

"We have a lot jam-packed here," said Ulma.

What are some specific products at Green Dog Market?

Some examples of the products sold at Green Dog Market are the peppers wrap (sourdough tortilla with sweet mini peppers, red pepper hummus and spinach) and the turkey wrap (sourdough tortilla, shredded cheddar, turkey and avocado oil, herbed mayonnaise and bacon).

Green Dog Market also had deluxe goat cheddar Mac & Cheese and baby bella mushroom cheese with fresh spinach.

Some of its vendors are West Bend-based Honey Grove Apiaries, Tusol Wellness (a company that offers organic smoothie boxes and protein boxes) and Kiki Milk (a plant-based organic milk company)

Green Dog Market's hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

What else is planned at Green Dog Market?

Ulma said she wants to have events where farmers can come in and talk and educate others on organic products. She also wants to have more prepared food such as fresh soup and sandwiches of the day. Ulma said she orders products based on the need, what customers ask and that customers can request certain products.

"I want people to come talk to me face-to-face," said Ulma. "Old school is how I want to work this business."
